For nearly 12 years, state officials have known about a problem with concrete at Seabrook nuclear reactor. This is a serious, but not insurmountable problem that won't go away any time soon. Another experiment involved the use of a low-temperature accelerating agent, called PolarSet (PS). It is responsible for creating a temperature gradient so that concrete can freeze. Since the ground at the site was frozen, the concrete was exposed to ambient air for seven days. The slab reached its lowest point at 0degC five days later. This was a noticeable improvement on the day before.
Although the aforementioned cold weather application was not without its drawbacks, the DP admixture produced a concrete with the right amount of air and slump, albeit with the wrong chemical mix. Even though the concrete was poured into steel forms before being set, it looked very much like normal concrete.
The biggest drawback of a low-temperature admixture is the cost. Transporting a pound worth of DP to remote locations is expensive. It's also costly. The admixture is now commercially available.
